June 30, 2023 State Board of Education School Construction Committee Meeting

The State Board School Construction Committee met once again on June 30. A members of the Valley Unified Administration and the MSAD33 board of directors attended via Zoom. During that meeting the fact considerations and summary of findings were discussed regarding the MSAD33 and RSU 1 fires. A copy of those considerations and summary of findings linked attached below. After much discussion about the school construction debt ceiling, pending legislation regarding additional construction funding, and the timing of the next school construction rating cycle, the school construction chair made a recommendation to move forward the timeline for establishing a new rating cycle. (The current State Board of Education strategic plan has the next rating cycle going into effect for 2025-26.) Maine Department of Education Opens Applications for Major Capital School Construction Projects

The Maine Department of Education announced today that they have opened applications for major capital school construction projects. This is about 2 years earlier than originally anticipated! MSAD33 will begin the application for replacing both Dr. Levesque Elementary and Wisdom Middle High School with the hopes of being approved for one comprehensive PreK-12 school. Building a New School in Maine

After nearly a year of working to relocate our students to one campus at Wisdom, the board began planning for the future, determining that they want a new school for their students. It was determined by the board that a consolidated school for PreK-12 would serve the community best, especially given Wisdom's age and repair needs. In order to build a school in Maine, a community has 2 options: 1. Fund it 100% locally. 2. Get on a Major Capital Improvement List Given that a new school for the size needed to house PreK-12 in MSAD33 would likely run anywhere between 20 and 30 million dollars, funding it 100% locally is not an option, even after the fire insurance money is factored in. (More on this in a future post.). Therefore, the board knew that getting on the school construction list would be the only way.
