May 26, 2023 State Board of Education School Construction Committee Meeting

The May 23, 2023 State Board of Education School Construction Committee meeting was held via Zoom for all committee members and guests.  Superintendent Sirois, Assistant Superintendent Dionne, and MSAD33 board member Lisa Bernier were in virtual attendance at this meeting.

At the start of the meeting, Chair Desjardins shared with the school construction committee the up-to-date "fact sheet" that she had been working on for several months, specific to the MSAD33 and RSU 1 fires.  MSAD33 and RSU1 representatives were asked to confirm the accuracy of the fact sheet, which we did, and then the committee members were encouraged to ask questions.

Chair Desjardins explained that the committee is not ready to weigh in on their determination of how to proceed with the emergency projects.  Several factors still need to be considered before they do, with the most important being:

1. Current legislation to raise the school construction debt ceiling (aka school construction funding appropriation), and

2. To determine if it's best to follow past history to replace all or a significant portion of a school facility (by definition of an "emergency project"), or to include other buildings in each district that may/will need to be replaced in a consolidated project (such as DLES and Wisdom in one new school).

Chair Desjardins did state that the recommendation on how to proceed will likely be made at either the June or July school construction meeting.
